Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 4 Planning Begins — Extension to Coolangatta Airport

By Queensland Bureau·

Infrastructure Queensland has commenced detailed planning for Stage 4 of the Gold Coast Light Rail, which will extend the existing network from Burleigh Heads to Coolangatta Airport — a distance of approximately 13 kilometres.

The project, estimated to cost between $3.2 billion and $4.1 billion, will be funded jointly by the Commonwealth and state governments under the National Land Transport Network program.

Community information sessions are scheduled across seven locations on the southern Gold Coast throughout May and June, with a formal environmental impact assessment to follow in the second half of 2026.

The City of Gold Coast has long advocated for the extension, arguing it is essential for managing transport demand associated with the growing permanent population of the southern suburbs and the significant volumes of tourists accessing Coolangatta Airport.
