City of Yarra Completes Industrial Land Review — 14 Hectares Rezoned for Housing

By Victorian Bureau·

The City of Yarra has completed its landmark Industrial Land Review, recommending that 14 hectares of underused industrial land across five precincts be rezoned to allow residential and mixed-use development.

The review, which took three years to complete and involved extensive community and business consultation, identified land at Cremorne, Abbotsford, and Collingwood as suitable for conversion given the significant shift away from traditional manufacturing in inner Melbourne.

The recommendation will be forwarded to the Minister for Planning for approval, following which affected landowners will be able to lodge development applications for residential towers, offices, and ground-floor retail.

The council has recommended that any residential development on the rezoned land include a minimum 20 percent affordable housing component, and that a heritage assessment be completed for all buildings constructed prior to 1960 before demolition is approved.
