City of Adelaide Launches New Design Review Framework for Heritage Precincts

By SA Reporter·

The City of Adelaide has adopted a new Design Review Framework that will require all development proposals exceeding 10 metres in height, or those located within or adjacent to a heritage precinct, to undergo independent review by the Adelaide Design Review Panel.

The framework, which takes effect from 1 July 2026, replaces the previous voluntary pre-lodgement process and responds to ongoing community concerns about the quality of new buildings in the city's historic core.

Lord Mayor Jane Williams said the framework struck the right balance between enabling growth and protecting the city's unique character.

The Design Review Panel will comprise five members including architects, urban designers, and heritage specialists appointed by the council on rotating two-year terms.
